Kales Building

The Kales Building is a high-rise building located in downtown Detroit, a couple of blocks away from Comerica Park in Grand Circus Park. The building was constructed in 1914 and is one of the select few in the city designed by Albert Kahn.

RAM Construction Services was originally called upon to perform an exterior façade survey of the existing condition, including quantifying terracotta repairs, masonry repairs, sealant removal and replacement, and thoroughly cleaning the exterior facade. Once our crew rigged the building, it was evident that the structural steel was rusted far beyond what we had originally thought. Previous repairs done over a decade before had simply covered up the corroded steel and removed immediate fall hazards, leaving the structural steel exposed to the elements. Our team quickly approached ownership and explained the extent of the damage and the urgency of the correct repairs. Fortunately, the owner was able to budget for this emergency and issued a change order which added over 600 mandays to the project! The crew kept signage and sidewalk scaffolding neat. Constant communication kept ownership notified of changes immediately, and all work was completed ahead of schedule. A great project for the Ram Construction Services Resto-Façade Team!
