RAM Construction was the prime contractor for the Indiana Department of Transportation project, which required the repair and protection of 11 structures on I-74 between Covington and Veedersburg. Recently the Indiana Department of Transportation has added measures to the contract which enhance worker safety on Interstate Highway construction projects. On this project temporary barrier wall was installed to separate the traveling public from the workers. To reduce the time needed to install the 3500 lf of barrier wall at multiple locations during multiple phases, a lightweight aluminum barrier wall was utilized as each 50 LF section only weighs 3,000 lbs.
Once the safety measures were installed RAM Construction Services was able to start the work that would preserve the bridge for many years to come. the first task was to identify areas of deteriorated concrete on both the bridge deck and the barrier walls, repair using conventional batched concrete, rapid setting bag concrete and epoxy mortar patching. After the completion of all repairs long term preventative measures were installed on both the barrier walls and the bridge deck. Those measures included sealing the barrier walls using a clear penetrating sealer that repels water, protecting the bridge deck with a polymer overlay, and resealing the construction joints.
