Gulf Quest – National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, Mobile, AL
Located on the Mobile River in Alabama this 90,000 SF structure shaped like a vessel headed out to sea will anchor the only maritime museum dedicated to the Gulf of Mexico. Projected to open in 2014 this museum will be only 1 of 3 in the world to offer interactive displays teaching the rich history of maritime commerce.
With heavy average rainfalls (rivalling that of Seattle, Washington) the construction team identified moisture control as a top priority. RAM Construction Services was contracted by Ben Radcliff Company to provide critical waterproofing that would ensure the longevity of the structure. Waterproof traffic coating was applied to the exterior perimeter walkways to prevent moisture penetration and provide a slip resistant finish during emergency exits. The full size replica of a container ship inside the structure includes a pool to simulate water breaking at the bow of the vessel. RAM installed a pool coating to the walls and floor of the exhibit to insure the water stayed where it was supposed to be. RAM installed a waterproof membrane to the exterior walls of the full size bridge providing protection to the most exposed and vulnerable portion of the building.
