Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation identified dangerous conditions at the SR 281 crossing of the CSX Railroad in Somerset County, PA. The railroad crossing is on a skew and immediately before a traffic light. This created an unsafe situation where the traveling public would stop on or near the railroad tracks. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation designed a Red High Friction Surface Treatment to be installed 75 lineal feet prior to the railroad crossing. The red roadway demarcation provides a visible aid and increases stopping ability.
Grannas Bros. Stone & Asphalt Co., Inc. selected RAM Construction Services to perform the Red High Friction Surface Treatment portion of the project. RAM Construction Services proposed multiple options to the Department of Transportation to achieve their design requirements. Color Coated Recycled Glass Aggregate was chosen to be broadcasted in polymeric resin. RAM Construction Services used 8,000 pounds of the Red Colored Glass Aggregate and successfully completed the project in two days.
