RAM Construction Services of Michigan was the successful low bidder on the Indiana Department of Transportation Project B-35724-A, which included structure rehabilitation on 13 Bridges on or over the US-20 Bypass on the south side of Elkhart Indiana.
Upon Initial inspection of the expansion joints it was found that the current joint opening was greater then what the specified material allowed for. With the help of Watson Bowman, RAM Construction Services proposed a Preformed Silicone Expansion joint that could accommodate the joint opening and not incur a significate cost increase. The used of the proposed preformed silicone joints would be considered a test project and with its success it has now been incorporated in several other INDOT projects. Also, during the remove of an existing joint it was found that a void had formed under the shoulder of the concrete roadway. With a cooperative effort between INDOT and RAM Construction Services proper repairs were made to the bridge abutment and the void was filled was a structural flowable fill to ensure no future problems.
Also, included on the project was the repair of delaminated concrete on both the bridge deck and the bridge columns. Four of the structures received a Fiber Wrap Reinforcement in order to return the designed strength that was lost due to deterioration of the concrete as well as protect from future salt overspray from passing traffic during the harsh winter months.
