US 231 Bridge over the Wabash River is located south of Lafayette, Indiana and was selected by the Department of Transportation to have an epoxy concrete overlay placed on the bridge deck surface to improve friction values of the drive lanes and also act as a surface applied waterproofing system for concrete. As per the original scope of work, all repairs including the overlay, were to be completed while maintaining one lane of traffic on both the east and west side of the bridge deck. After meeting with the Department of Transportation, RAM Construction Services proposed removing the median barrier wall at each end of the bridge to maintain both directions of travel on either the east or west half of the bridge during phasing.
The proposed traffic shift was accepted, which allowed RAM Construction Services to install a 100% monolithic epoxy overlay system on the bridge deck, ensuring the state they would have a leak-proof waterproofing system. The project was completed using approximately 13,100 gallons of epoxy and 525,000 pounds of aggregate to complete a total deck surface area of 174,000 sq. ft.
