In July of 2013, RAM Construction Services began working on an extensive project located in St. Paul, Minnesota. The ongoing assignment consists of various highway bridges to be coated with a penetrating crack sealer application as well as two layers of an epoxy-urethane blend waterproofing system. This 3-layer system ensures a substantial improvement in the quality of the concrete bridge decks and enhances their overall skid resistances.
This project is particularly challenging because of the unique schedule restrictions assigned to each structure. High volumes of traffic, unfavorable temperatures, and rain delays all impact when our crew is able to work. Differing traffic volumes, for instance, dictates whether 10-hour, weekend only, or nighttime only work shifts are established. For these reasons, MNDOT made it clear that they wanted to team up with a quality contractor for this assignment; RAM Construction Services was more than happy to oblige.
Not only is St. Paul, Minnesota a demanding project to schedule, but it has multiple environmental considerations. Many of the numerous bridges run directly over the Mississippi River. RAM is taking necessary precautions to ensure that the materials used will not contaminate such a significant agricultural and ecological water source. Custom-made barrier walls are utilized along the sides of each bridge to prevent debris from polluting the waterways. Dustless equipment is used in the surface preparation, and all drains are fully covered before any work begins.
To date, the RAM team is scheduled to complete twenty-six (26) bridge locations, with many more expected to be added to the contract. The largest bridge that has been completed was over 350,000 square feet! Through RAM’s efficient means and methods, traffic flow has been maintained and Minnesota’s travelling public has been unaffected by detours. This project is a great overall experience and is scheduled for completion in September of 2015, although RAM’s involvement could be contractually extended to 2017.
