The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel was experiencing deterioration to its concrete ventilation shaft. RAM Construction Services was contracted to perform the restoration which consisted of concrete demolition, installation of new reinforcing steel, and placement of shotcrete in a section of the tunnel. Project logistics, traffic control, unique working hours, and daily project mobilization, combined with the continued operation of the tunnel, created an extremely challenging project. RAM Construction Services utilized a converted school bus with overhead hammers mounted on a moveable platform to complete the demotion and shotcrete placement. The project had to be completed in five weeks, working four nights a week for 5 hours a night. Considering the unique challenges faced, the project completion date was successfully met and a satisfied owner was given confidence in RAM’s ability to complete future unique and challenging projects.
